"Why Safety-critical Software needs more than Software Quality Assurance to Manage Safety Risk"

Abstract

Safety-critical software is found in airplanes, automobiles, medical technologies and many other kinds of systems. Quality assurance is a prerequisite for managing safety risk associated with safety-critical software. However, the management of safety risk for such systems is not simply a matter of a more rigorous approach to quality assurance. In this presentation, I will discuss some of the additional steps that need to be taken to management safety risk for complex systems involving software. I intend to leave some time available for friendly debate among participants about the similarities/differences between "quality assurance" and "safety assurance".
